What
you will find here is rather the ruins of a convent than a
convent properly speaking. Annexed to it there is also a
third order of Saint Francis chapel. This place was
abandoned in 1859, being later required by the government so
that an orphan asylum and an elementary school could work
here, in 1937. After nine years performing a social role,
this building returned to work as a convent in 1946.
Nowadays, after having been largely repaired and reformed (although
not modified), it shelters the Culture Secretary of Angra
dos Reis, where many cultural activities have been promoted.
The building is formally protected by IPHAN (a society
created to protect our historical and cultural patrimony )
since 1954, being any modification strictly prohibited. |
