       The Nuclear Plants

Back

The Nuclear Plants Angra I e II are part of the so-called Almirante Alvaro Alberto Nuclear Central. Angra I woks since 1985 and has generated since then 675 MW, over 23 million MWh. Angra II with capacity to generate 1309 MW began to operate on 2000.

Angra II is the first one at the picture, the one with the gray ceiling and a huge chimney. Angra I is the one with the white ceiling.

It was built in a beautiful spot that was named by The Indians as "Itaorna" which means rotten stone. Probably because of the earth sliding that use to occur there during the rainy season.

In one of this earth sliding some years ago a hill nearby fell down to The Ocean taking with her the laboratory that use to belong to Angra I. The bridge built in a curve right before Itaorna is exactly where the hill used to be.

The ecologists guarantee that it was inappropriate the place they chose to built The Plants. Eletronuclear defends herself claiming that Itaorna was studied long enough. That the first project previewed 8 atomic plants and the main reason that makes Itaorna so perfect for The Plants is the distance between the three main Brazilian cities (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Belo Horizonte) from it.

The ecologists are also worried about the seawater being used to cool down the radiators. Even though it seems harmless and the authorities say that there is no danger of nuclear contamination they claim that it’s modifying the ecosystem.
